Peter Cartriers

writer/producer

Peter Cartriers co-wrote "Out Of The Darkness" and produced half of Sarah Dawn Finer's debut album. It was released May 30th and went directly to #2 at the Swedish album chart.

"My father was a jazz bass player and was born in South Africa, then he started touring Europe with a Big Band; this was at a time when there were lots of American musicians such as Quincy Jones and Don Cherry spending time in Stockholm", Peter remembers."I was born in Stockholm and, although I didn't live with my father, he was around when he wasn't touring. And then when I was fourteen I started playing drums in a punk band. After that I started getting into reggae and played in in a reggae band. But I wasn't convinced about a career in music then, I was playing a lot of sports, I made some music videos and then I directed a feature film, Sökarna (Searchers), with a friend. We didn't have much money for it and we didn't have much experience, but it was one of the earliest films about the "youth culture"; it got released and actually went to the top of the film charts on release. And it was a lot of fun doing it."

At this point, Peter started working with Stephen Simmonds. "As I had done videos and I knew quite a few people, music was always around. Stephen had written the whole album (Alone), and I knew him from around anyway, so I went in and just helped him with the arrangements. After that, I thought, "OK, perhaps I'll take this on a bit further". So I produce some songs with Stephen for Mica Paris, which led me into starting a label with Stephen called Monumental. Throughout though I've never wanted to run a big label with a roster of ten artists or so, I've just wanted to work with the people I feel drawn to."

One of Peter's finds is the young vocalist, Isak. Already the extraordinary range of Isak's voice is generating keen interest. "For Isak, I was the A&R for the record label", Peter asserts, quietly, "and I produced just one song for the album, but he is the type of artist I feel interested in. Then I co-wrote two songs, "No More" and "In The Beginning", with a Jamaican singer, Tanya Stephens, and Emil Gothard for Tanya's album, Sintoxicated. And then I'm doing some more writing with Stephen, but the main thing is working with all these people that are extremely talented and what ever I can add is always going to be inspiring, whether as a writer or a producer."
When writing for other artists Peter has been writing for the Greek superstar Anna Vissi as well Elena Paparizou who won the Eurovision Songs Contest 2005. Her album has reached Platinum in Greece. Another artist that has covered his songs is Turkish star Gokhan Ozen. Other talents Peter is working and developing at the moment is Paper Moon Dragon who is creating a buzz at major labels in Sweden and Germany. Another new interesting artist is V-King that Peter is working with. Soon to be presented to labels around the world. Peter has also finished his own album under the name The Apostles a mix of soulful reggae and pop with Peter doing most of the vocals and playing on the album with a little help from his friends.
